Description

This book openly professes to contain seven sensational sermons. We hope and believe that there are three virtues these sermons have. They are sensational, by which we mean they are impressive, perhaps sometimes startling; at least they are interestarousing. They have made a sensation when they were preached, and we believe they ought to make a profound impression on many as they are read. The best Bible preaching was startling, sensational —Isaiah, preaching naked and barefoot for three years, as told in Isaiah, chapter twenty; Moses, calling the people to leave the tents of Korah, Datham, and Abiram so that the ground could open and swallow these wicked men, as it did; Jesus, preaching on the torments of the rich man in Hell or denouncing in scorching language the Pharisees in Matthew, chapter twenty-three; Paul, preaching before Felix on questions of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come until that wicked king trembled. The best Bible preaching was arousing, shocking, pointed, and in the best sense, sensational. These sermons also take a plain, strong stand on sin and error. They deal with particular sins by prominent individuals and draw lessons for the multitude, just as did some Bible sermons. So Elijah preached on Mount Carmel and then cut off the heads of the 450 prophets of Baal, his opponents! So Jesus preached in the temple. “It is not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves,” and he made a whip and drove the moneychangers from the temple and overthrew the tables of them that sold doves! So John the Baptist faced Herod over living with his brother's wife, and so Stephen faced the Pharisees and preached, “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye” (Acts 7:51). Jesus preached a sermon when the Tower of Siloam fell and when certain men were put to death by Pilate for treason. So I have undertaken to preach the truth in connection with some striking events and prominent sins and heresies. And perhaps the strongest virtue of these sermons is that they are Bible sermons. They are full of Scripture. They attempt to apply the blessed Word of God to the problems facing men everywhere, and we trust that many will be helped to an understanding of the will of God and particularly will be led to turn from their sins and trust the dear Lord Jesus through these Bible sermons.
