Description
The year 2009 started with the worst massacres in the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army to wipe out the Palestinian militant group Hamas, columnist Ahmad Ramadan wrote in the Beirut daily AL MUSTAQBAL on Jan 4. According to Ramadan, the year 2009 witnessed two major Palestinian failures. The first was in the peace process, as was explicitly admitted by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This failure prompted the Palestinian president to announce in protest that he would not be running for re-election in upcoming presidential polls. Abbas attributed the failure of the peace process to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's unwillingness to pursue negotiations with the Palestinians. He accused Netanyahu of refusing to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in the Palestinian West Bank and East Jerusalem. However, according to Ramadan, Abbas failed to understand that the Israelis are not yet ready to pay the price for peace by succumbing to the world community's demand to grant statehood to Palestinians.
